Game of Thrones
My media intake is constantly through the roof, I watch movies and tv pretty much every moment I'm not playing video games. While I do watch so much, there is still much that falls below my radar. Game of Thrones has been on the edge of my radar since it was announced, although there was never such great talk among my circles as to draw me to it. That is until my friend Renda, from Line Zero and Pink Fish Press asked me about it; the tipping point had been reached and I needed to watch it.
Armed with nothing better to do with my day and a vague interest in the contents of the show, I began watching Game of Thrones. The setting is a fictional land with well thought out and diverse civilizations. For the most part the primary characters are Noblemen, so there is alot of politics and backstabbing. The casting for the showing is absolutely top notch, my favorite characters being, Eddard Stark(Sean Bean) and Tyrion Lannister(Peter Dinklage). Game of Thrones has a very large ensemble cast and picking out the best performances would be a very difficult task as all of the characters are so well played that they are believable and enjoyable. It's hard to concieve that it was spawned from a series of books and games, since translation to the home screen rarely carries over well.
What intrigues me more than the per-episode-plots are the over arching background stories and myths that are spoken of throughout the series. Legends of dragons, fierce battles and power struggles of the past, and winters that last for years on end; all give the world a very rich and lived in feel that I find so enjoyable in such fantasy realms. I look forward to seeing if these fictions come to light, that dragons and monsters will roam the realm again.
The Quality of the show is great as only HBO can produce, in years past there have been so many badly produced fantasy movies and tv shows it is always a crap shoot whether or not a new one will be good or not. Even the ones that were "good" (Xena, Legend of the Seeker) always seem drastically under produced and had a cheesy feel to them. Game of Thrones is a fantastic example of what the genre of Fantasy can be.

ReplyDeleteI can't blame you everytime I see Sean Bean, I think he's going to try and steal the one ring :)
ReplyDeletePeter Dinklage is really awesome in this - clearly the best of the mini actors.
ReplyDeleteI cannot agree more, if he doesn't win awards for this show, then they should never give awards again.

Anyway, nice review for a TV show, although I'm not a great fan of the fantasy genre. :)
I've honestly never heard of this show. I'll try to look around for it now though.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the show, but, coming in to it from having read the books, I always felt as though it would be hard to follow if you hadn't read them.

ReplyDeleteLegend of the Seeker is based off my favorite book series the Sword of Truth. I haven't watched the show yet, but I bet I would have trouble watching it as they won't stick closely enough to the actual happenings. :(
